An analysis of the Socio-Economic Impact of Co-operatives in Africa and their Institutional Impact

The 8th African Ministerial Co-operative Conference held in Lesotho in 2005, identified three key areas for reshaping co-operative development in Africa: Government and co-operative movement relationship, Research and development, Information and communications technology. One of the research engagements is the study which was launched by ICA Africa In connection with the ICA Africa Members’ Forum. The research entitled “An Analysis of the Socio-Economic Impact of Co-operatives in Africa and their Institutional Impact”, highlights the tremendous contribution of co-operatives to social and economic development in most African countries. It also recognises that there are issues that need to be addressed if the co-operative movement in Africa is to reposition itself, to develop structures and systems that are sustainable, and to operate as member owned and member controlled democratic institutions. The research was carried out in six countries; Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Swaziland and Tanzania. The research was carried out as part of ICA Africa’s project “The Enabling Environment for Co-operatives” in East, Central and Southern Africa which aimed at contributing towards an enabling policy environment for co-operatives to play a greater role in economic development and poverty reduction. The project was funded by the Canadian Co-operative association (CCA). ICA-CCA, 2008, 172 pp.

Report of the Colloquium on the Contribution of the Co-operative Sectors on Housing Development
The Colloquium was convened to address the UN Habitat Agenda which call for collaboration of the United Nations system and the co-operative movement to improve shelter delivery and the management, maintenance and revitalisation of housing stocks. It focused on the diverse housing co-operative experiences with particular emphasis on the realities in Central and Eastern Europe where privatisation of the housing stock has in some instances led to housing co-operatives being transformed into condominiums. The meeting was co-organised by the United Nations HABITAT, United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), International Co-operative Alliance (ICA), Housing Development Administration of Turkey (HDA) and the Central Housing Co-operative Association in Turkey. The report is also available electronically: www.unhabitat.org/programmes/housingpolicy/documents/HS-642.pdf
